Divas’s Guide to Summer Beauty

Diva’s Guide to Summer Beauty

By: Kayla Denise Thomas

I don’t know about you guys but when the calendar flips to May, I’m already in the summer mode but when it flips to June, it’s time to kick it up into high gear.

Now for me, June usually means working at a summer camp but outside of that summer is all about beach trips, music festivals, road trips, cookouts, kickbacks, parties, and more. Depends on your crowd and what you vibe with but in any event, summer is what you make it. New season, new fun, and new opportunity.

Now with me being a beauty enthusiast and all, I have to let you all in on some of my top beauty tips for going into Summer ’17, I know some of you all take the term “Summertime fine” serious. (Whispers to you: Yeah I do too, it’s okay, we all good sis/bro)

  1. Drink plenty of water AND electrolytes

This is an important part of the beauty side of the summer. Making sure you nourish yourself from within will have a lot to do with how your skin will look throughout the summer. Make sure you drink your daily recommended amount of water (and over on even hotter days) and you can switch it up with some electrolytes as well to help with replenishing all the water you lose from sweating. If you want to have fun and look good while doing it, stay hydrated out there and watch your sugar intake. Need a little extra reminder? If you have a Fitbit, turn on the reminders for logging water or install another app to help you keep at your goal.

  1. Wear BB Cream or Tinted Moisturizer with SPF

With it being so hot, it’s too hot to wear a full face of foundation all day every day during the summer. For a light coverage go for a tinted moisturizer or BB Cream close to your skintone with SPF. The SPF in the tinted moisturizer or BB Cream will help protect your face from the sun’s bright UV rays that can be damaging to your skin in the long run. I’ve been using Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream for the past two years and I love it. Right coverage, shading is pretty good, and the SPF is good. Runs for $6.99-$9.99 depending on where you buy. It’s also safe for those with sensitive skin as it is hypoallergenic and does not clog pores.

  1. Keep Up with Your Skincare Routine

Summer is not the time to skip three or so days without exfoliating or doing your treatments. This especially goes for if you have dry skin. The drier the air, the more it will dry your skin out if you don’t continue to take care of your skin. Make sure you are keeping up with your hydrating moisturizers and exfoliating when you usually would.

  1. Watch Your Foundation

If you want to only wear foundation to evening/nighttime events and you have been out in the sun tanning or not, check and make sure the shade you have still fits you. This is when some women end up looking for a summer shade. Attempting to use the wrong shade can give you unwanted flashback in pictures with a flash or make you appear to look ashy. If you have a higher in foundation and don’t want to splurge on that brand at the moment, try using Pinterest to find a formula similar to the one you have. To easily find your shade, you can go to Foundation.com. Once on the site you put in the current foundation you use and the shade, after doing so a list of brands and shades pretty close if not dead on will appear.

  1. Listen to Your Skin

As the seasons change, your skin needs change. Like in #4, if you skin is dry but drier in the summer than it is in the spring, make sure you change accordingly. Whether it’s adding another hydrating product to your morning or night routine, changing your primer that goes under your makeup, or even your lotion.

  1. Avoid Heavy Eyelid Primers

If you still want to rock your eyeshadows during the summer (let’s face it, who doesn’t) go for a lighter eyelid primer. The creamier ones will move around and not set as well in the heat and humidity. A lighter formula that’s quick drying will prove better and help your eyeshadow stay put. I recommend the e.l.f. Eyelid Primer in Sheer, works for pretty much all skintones.

  1. Waterproof Can Be Your Bestie

No one wants raccoon-eyes. If you don’t have a waterproof eyeliner or mascara, swing by your drugstore and pick up an inexpensive one, to keep that fierceness all day.

  1. Two Words: Blotting Papers

If your T-Zone gets oily quickly, blotting papers can help you blot away the excess oil without removing a lot of your makeup. You can then touch-up a light translucent powder afterwards.

I hope these help you throughout the wondrous summer season beauty wise and I hope your summer is bright and full of irreplaceable memories!
